Carolina’s Mexican Food: 1202 E Mohave St Phoenix, AZ 85034

* I am not a food critic! I am just a hungry biker! I love to ride my bike to food and drink. I try to fairly review things like: bike parking, how welcoming they are to sweaty people with helmet hair, food/drink and price.

Today we went to Carolina’s in Mohave. This is the popular restaurant’s oldest location, built in 1972. This restaurant is all about the food, no frills. Show up wearing whatever you want: lycra, helmet, shorts, sweaty tank… you will not stand out. No one is looking at you. People are here to eat.

No bike rack.

Not only was there not a bike rack, there was nothing suitable to lock up a bike to. I tried locking up to the bars on the windows, but I couldn’t get the U-lock though them. The restaurant is located very close to Mohave, a desolate street… the only option was to bring the bike in. Luckily for me this was not an issue at all. No said anything to me or even gave me an annoyed look. There was plenty of room for me to bring the bike through the main door, roll it through the restaurant and lean it by my table while I ate my lunch. Zero effs were given.

The food in this place is for real. This isn’t trendy food… this is authentic, delicious and filling Mexican food. The lady who took my order suggested the Machaca Tacos which are two soft tacos filled with shredded beef that has been perfectly seasoned in a yummy guiso topped with lettuce and green onions. It was served with a side of rice and beans. The flour tortillas used for the tacos were homemade, thin, warm and heavenly. I decided to try some Aguas Frescas in different flavors: Horchata and Jamaica. I am not really into sweet drinks or sodas, so I knew I wasn’t going to love them, but I really wanted to give them a try. I definitely liked Horchata the best, but after a couple of sips I switched back to my water.

2 Machaca Tacos Soft and Aguas Frescas: $8.15 (not including taxes)

This is such a good price for a generous serving of delicious, filling food! I would skip the drink and stick to the meal for only $6.25. That’s a steal!

Overall we say Carolina’s is… bicycle friendly-ish….

So this one is kind of a stretch but we went for a yes because:

  • Casual vibe.
  • You can bring your bike in.
  • The food is so good we will come back.
